A Game-Changer for Your Wedding Day
As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing countless love stories in one of the most beautiful and dynamic cities in the world. From lush forests and mountain backdrops to urban charm and waterfront views, Seattle offers endless opportunities for stunning wedding photography. One moment that has grown increasingly popular is the first look—a private moment where couples see each other before the ceremony.
A first look on your wedding day can transform the way you experience one of the most significant moments of your life. Traditionally, couples would wait until the ceremony to see each other, but this modern approach has gained popularity for good reason. A first look allows for a private and intimate moment between the couple, free from the distractions of guests and the busyness of the day. It sets a beautiful tone for the ceremony and creates a space where you can genuinely express your emotions without the pressure of an audience.
Here’s why, from my perspective, a first look can be a game-changer for your wedding day and how to make the most of it in the unique setting of Seattle.
The Emotional Impact of a First Look
As a photographer, one of my favorite things about a first look is the raw emotion it brings out. Without the audience of family and friends, couples feel free to express themselves fully. Some cry, some laugh, and some simply stand in awe of each other—these moments are genuine and unforgettable. During the first look, I step back and let the couple take their time. My goal is to document the moment naturally, preserving the emotions in a way that feels authentic. This provides the opportunity for me to capture stunning, candid photos without the time constraints often faced during the ceremony.
Ease Pre-Wedding Jitters: Almost every time I've worked with a couple for a first look, someone mentions how much calmer they felt afterwards. The longer you wait to see each other, the more anticipation starts to build. A first look gives you an opportunity to connect with each other earlier in the day and get past a lot of the nerves before even starting the ceremony.
How a First Look Enhances Your Timeline
One of the most practical benefits of a first look is how it simplifies and streamlines your wedding day timeline. By getting the majority of the couple and bridal party photos done ahead of the ceremony, you can enjoy a more relaxed post-ceremony experience. This leaves precious time for the couple to mingle with guests and take in the celebrations, rather than feeling rushed to finish photos before the reception. This seamless flow of events can create more cherished memories and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the joy of your wedding day.
This also means we can take advantage of golden hour (just before sunset) for additional portraits, especially if your first look happens earlier in the day. It’s the perfect way to balance efficiency with creativity.
First Look Tips for Seattle Couples
Prepare for the Weather: Always have a backup plan, especially for outdoor first looks.
- Trust Your Photographer: As someone who knows the city, I can recommend the best locations and help you find spots with great lighting and minimal crowds.
- Schedule Enough Time: Rushing through a first look can take away from the experience. Allocate at least 20–30 minutes for the moment itself, plus extra time for couple’s portraits and bridal party photos.
- Seattle’s Unpredictable Weather: Let’s face it—Seattle’s weather has a mind of its own. Whether it’s a rare sunny morning or a dramatic cloudy or rainy afternoon, Seattle rain doesn’t have to ruin the moment—a clear umbrella or cozy indoor space can add charm and intimacy. Many venues offer picturesque indoor and outdoor spaces suitable for a first look, allowing for beautiful backdrops regardless of weather conditions. However, I am always partial to the outdoors if we have a choice!!
- Communicate: Be clear with your hair and makeup team as well as your bridal party so they know when to be ready for the first look and bridal party photos that follow. Many couples will also take the opportunity after the first look to take family photos before the ceremony as well. Make sure that you communicate your expectations with everyone that needs to be there for photos.
Final Thoughts
From my perspective as a local Seattle/Tacoma wedding photographer, a first look is much more than a modern trend. It’s a chance to slow down, connect, and create unforgettable memories in a city that offers endless beauty and romance. Whether you’re drawn to the emotional intimacy, the practical timeline benefits, or the opportunity for stunning wedding photos, a first look can elevate your wedding day in ways you might not expect.
